How the Views of Magwitch Change through the Course of...
How the Views of Magwitch Change through the Course of the Novel Great Expectations is about a boy called Pip, who has Great Expectations and doesnt want to be poor all his life. Along his way, a lot of strange things happen to him, such as meeting strange people and getting money off unknown people. Great Expectations was wrote in 1860 and was Dickens thirteenth novel. This essay will be about how our views on Magwitch change through the story, such as at the beginning us thinking he is evil and nasty just because he was a convict but then later on we see the good side. As I have already mentioned because of the way Magwitch is presented at first A fearful man, all in coarse gray, with a great iron on his leg. Thisâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It shows that Magwitch is his benefactor and this one statement totally changes Pips outlook of his good fortune. I think this is a big turn in the story as Pip always thought it was Miss Havisham. This shows Magwitches good side again and now we do not see him a the convict but as Magwitch which makes him sound more human. - Then in chapter 41 Pip feels he cannot take any more of Magwitchs money (mostly because Pip is too proud and it is the money of a criminal). At the same time, Pip does not want Magwitchs execution on his hands, which will happen Magwitch is discovered back in England. So Pip and Herbert Pocket the next day try and convince Magwitch to leave England. - In chapter 42 magwitch gets the sympathy vote with use because he explains why he has always stolen things, (because he was hungry etc) There are many other chapter which change Pips outlook of life a little and that change our views of Magwtitch but I feel that I have mention the main one this being in chapter 39 where Pip find out about his benefactor. When this book was written the penal system I think was really hard, compared to today it must have been like hell. Taking a Blue Book Exam is a Social Practice According to Literacy Practices by David Barton and Mary Hamilton, literacy is a social practice. To explain this, Barton and Hamilton point out literacy Is how people discuss and interpret written text. Literacy practices are described to us by Barton and Hamilton as ââ¬Å"in the simplest sense literacy practices are what people do with literacyâ⬠(8). We will write a custom essay sample on Argument Summary or any similar topic only for you Order Now Literacy practices eventually lead to literacy events which are defined as observable episodes which arise from practices and are shaped by them. The notion of events stresses the situated nature of literacy and that it always exists in a social contextâ⬠(8). Text Is crucial In molding our Institutions Into what they are and literacy is deeply rooted in our everyday lives in unexpected ways. In their essay, Barton and Hamilton present to us six propositions to further prove the nature of literacy as a social practice. Next, I will share a literacy event that adheres to two of those propositions. My first semester of college had started and I was feeling confident and determined to do well. Although I was fresh out of high school. I didnââ¬â¢t doubt my abilities. In all honesty, I underestimated the difficulty of college due to the college courses and advanced placement courses Iââ¬â¢d taken throughout my high school career. It was a simple and short-lived time. Then, I was Introduced with a bluebook test. You see, multiple choice, fill in the blank, matching, and true or false worked just fine for me. But when my history professor told us to buy a bluebook, I had no Idea what to expect. When I went hunting for this said bluebook, most people didnââ¬â¢t even now what it was! I went to Walter, office supply stores, book stores, and no one knew what I was talking about Finally. I found one In the campus store and when I opened it, blank pages stared back at me. Even though we went over what was to be expected on the test in class, I was still concerned. How am I supposed to succeed at something so foreign to me? Well. I spent a lot of my time just studying the best I could. And then I had an idea. I took my extra bluebook (which Iââ¬â¢d bought for my second exam in the course) and I took a list of topics and began writing. The best way to see how to fill these pages with information is to do so without material in front of me as if I were taking the exam in my own home. Secondly, I went through my notes and asked myself the series of who, what. Where, when and why for each event. After discovering some new study tactics, I realized that not much had actually changed. The only deference between this dreaded bluebook test and a high school test Is that I have to communicate to my professor that know the material without a written medium such as a structured question. Instead, I simply had to write down everything I know about the topic and hopefully point out the aspects and details There are two of the six propositions from Barton and Hamiltonians Literacy Practices that apply to this literacy event. The first is, ââ¬Å"literacy practices are purposeful and embedded in broader social goals and cultural practicesâ⬠(8). My goal is, of course, to get the best grade possible on this test. However, there is a broader goal that applies here as well. I want to do well in college and gain knowledge that could potentially be useful to me later in life. The second proposition from Barton and Hamilton that applies to my literacy event is, ââ¬Å"literacy practices change and new ones are acquired through process of informal learning and sense makingâ⬠(8). By leaving high school and entering college, I am acquiring a new literacy. At first, I was mistaken by thinking college would be the same level of difficulty as high school and I later realized I needed to change and adapt in order to be successful in my new environment. A bluebook test is not the only aspect of college that was new to me. In fact, there are continuously new things for me to learn here. Like the bus system, the campus alert system, being aware of traffic so I can predict my commute time, balancing a school schedule Iââ¬â¢m not used to with my work schedule, trying to make friends with classmates, and even simply discovering the direction I really want to go in my life. Barton and Hamilton were right; I had acquired new literates and I had broader goals beyond that bluebook test. There are literacy practices, literacy events and those propositions prove true to me. Literacy is a social practice and I understand that now, thank you to Barton and Hamilton. How to cite Argument Summary, Essays

The company s operations were limited to the retail distribution of lumber products. Their typical products included plywood, moldings, and sash and door products. Despite good profits Butler Lumber Company experienced a shortage in cash and found it necessary to increase its bank loans. Issues: y y Why does a Profitable company such as Butler Lumber need external Financing? Should Butler Lumber Company accept the discount that is being offered from its suppliers? y Project the Butler Lumber Company s balance sheet and Income Statement for all of 1991 under two scenarios If they accept the discount If they don t accept the discount Analysis: Butler Lumber Company is a profitable company anticipating tremendous growth, and typical of a company in this phase of the business cycle, the cash needed to meet obligations outstrips its inflow from operations. We will write a custom essay sample on Butler Lumber or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Butler s exponential growth has caused them to need external financing, because they can t self-fund their working capital needs. The might be able to mitigate some of this through better inventory management control such as squeezing their suppliers on credit terms or for increased volume discounts. Going forward their fixed costs will also help build economies of scale which should diminish their external financing demands in future fiscal periods. Butler is banking on a tremendous amount of future cash flows to be generated from its assets to help justify its value to shareholders, which is why stakeholders like the bank continue to extend additional credit lines. The company under the without the discount scenario utilized $105K to increase its sales position to maintain its average day s sales in cash it managed throughout earlier fiscal periods. A material portion was purposed to support its account receivables which is entirely a function of exponential sales growth. The company maintained its efficiency in cash management during the projected fiscal year, 1991. Inventory also increased $491K, again, a function of its increase in sales growth, while maintaining its average inventory turnover ratio from earlier fiscal periods. Finally, the company needed to fund $247K in Property, net for the purposes of capital expansion to its infrastructure in an effort to support the large top-line growth. Going forward, if the revenue stream reaches a steady state, we would expect the Property, net to remain static, and the need for external financing to greatly diminish, as the company can self-fund its working capital without additional financing. One other reason that the company needs external financing is that Mr. Butler probably wishes to remain the sole owner of the company. Additionally, Mr. Butler has little other family assets to help fund the business. Other than the business, his assets are limited to the equity in his residence. These assets are insufficient to cover the firm s need for additional capital infusion. Mr. Butler has already agreed to a lien against his residence to help shore up the line of revolving credit, so additional internal funding is not feasible at this juncture. Going forward, Mr. Butler may able to help reduce his capital needs, and hence external finance if he is able to more tightly manage his working capital through more efficient turnover ratios. Additionally, as Constant growth in the net sales over the past years we mentioned, he may be able to also strengthen the balance sheet through some long-term debt refinancing (eg- lower fixed rate loans) or through other means such as private equity through affluent investors. Moreover, if the firm continues with its exponential growth the opportunity may present itself to issue more equity to help mitigate some of the leverage currently present in the balance sheet. Our group believes that it would be advantageous for Butler Lumber to elect to take the 2% discount.

Using FOIL to Solve Algebraic Equations
Using FOIL to Solve Algebraic Equations Early algebra requires working with polynomials and the four operations. One acronym to help multiply binomials is FOIL. FOIL stands for First Outer Inside Last. Example (4x 6) (x 3) We look at the first binomials which are 4x and x which gives us 4x2 Now we look at the two outside binomials which are 4x and 3 which gives us 12x Now we look at the two inside binomials which are 6 and x whichh gives us 6x Now we look at the last two binomials which are 6 and 3 which gives us 18 Finally, you add all of them together to get: 4x2 18x 18 All you need to remember is what FOIL stands for, whether you have fractions involved or not, just repeat the steps in FOIL and you will be able to mulitply to binomials. Practice with the worksheets and in no time it will come to you with ease. You are really just distributing both terms of one binomial by both terms of the other binomial. Practice Here are 2 PDF worksheets with answers for you to work on to practice multiplying binomials using the FOIL method. There are also many calculators that will do these calculations for you, but it is crucial you understand how to multiply binomials correctly before using calculators. You will need to print the PDFs to see the answers or practice with the worksheets. Also, here are 10 sample questions to practice with: (4x - 5) (x - 3)(4x - 4 (x - 4)(2x 2) (3x 5)(4x - 2) (3x 3)(x - 1) (2x 5)(5x 2) (4x 4)(3x - 3) (x - 2)(4x 1) 3x 2)(5x 3) 3x 4)(3x - 3) (3x 2) Conclusion It should be noted that FOIL can only be used for binomial multiplication. FOIL is not the only method that can be used. There are other methods, although FOIL tends to be the most popular. If using the FOIL method is confusing for you, you may wish to try the distributive method, the vertical method or the grid method. Regardless of the strategy, you find to work for you, all the methods will lead you to the correct answer. After all, mathematics is about finding and using the most efficient method that works for you. Working with binomials usually occurs in the ninth or tenth grades in high school. An understanding of variables, multiplication, binomials are required before multiplying binomials.

Types of Risk - Assignment Example Even though, these value risk models are utilized to quantify risks in the market but there are few limitations that are addressed using stress tests that study the movements of the market on hypothetical grounds (Yufeng, 2011). Supply chains have the aim to increase productivity, ensure cost effective practices and fulfill demands of the markets. However, there are many risks that may disrupt their working thus, in order to manage the risks involved the first step into place them into supply chain risk management (SCRM) (Tummala & Schoenherr, 2011). This would enable them to identify the operations, resources and the sources through which information inflows and outflows, through co-citation analysis. The changing interest are identified in SCRM and then tools such as Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) can be used appropriately in SCRM. Moreover, pricing policies and analysis tools can examine the risks involved in supply chain that help manage supply chain risks in an effective way(Nurmaya, 2012). Credit risk is the kind of risk associated with market and customers. This risk arises when a business feels that borrowers might not pay their debt on time or due date. Thus, in this regard, credit can be managed by setting credits limit. The limits of credits are based on credit ratings. Likewise, funding or liquidity risk occurs when there is the risk that a person is not able to meet his obligations to provide loan commitments. The techniques associated with mitigating funding technique are holding liquid assets, securitizations, creating contingency plans, portfolio management techniques, having extensive databases on defaults and having credit insurance products. Due to increasing number of credit related losses, companies require new analytical solutions to make improvements in their databases

Healthcare and Public Health Critical Infrastructure Sector
Healthcare and Public Health Critical Infrastructure Sector In order to optimize the security and resilience of the countries critical infrastructure, it is essential for a concerted approach that integrates all relevant partners and stakeholders. The healthcare and public health sector are crucial partners towards this end. The continuity of healthcare operations in times of emergency is quintessential. They role is disaster response and response makes them an asset and elevates their importance to national security beyond mere stakeholder status. The necessity for a sector-specific plan that optimizes the relationship between the players in the healthcare and public health industry and liaising with the department of homeland security has become vital. In the contemporary society, threats to the countries critical infrastructure have evolved diversifying into digital and biological platforms. The Healthcare and Public Health (HPH) Sector-Specific Plan (SSP) is created to champion cross-sector effort sector and collaboration towards enhancin g security and resilience of the industries critical infrastructure covering all hazards. The guidance of the SSP is meant to customize the guidance to be relevant to the applicable industry players. This entails ensuring the strategic guidance is compatible with the risk landscape and unique operating landscape of the healthcare and public health sector. The above prevents the sector layers from expending energy on extraneous factors. The National Infrastructure Protection Plan 2013 has been instrumental towards that end. The sector has formulated an integrated approach to managing the risks to industrys critical infrastructure and corresponding workforce. The approach involves identification and preparation for the potential threats as well as hazards. Preparedness assumes that the all hazard risks are always imminent. In order to consider all dimensions of attack, the cross-sector councils are allowed to leverage simulation technology to visualize the full range of consequences in the instance of a biological attack (Almklov Antonsen, 2014). The SSP has proved innovative in its approach even utilizing potential risk scenarios inspired by films. The above is important given the last terrorist attack was attributed to a lapse in the imagination. Another strategy employed towards anticipating the above eventuality is mitigating weaknesses identified in the HPH critical infrastructure, its networks, and systems. Once the vulnerabilities are highlighted, ad hoc strategic plans to fix them are recommended lest they expand. The critical infrastructure within the purview of the healthcare and public health extends beyond the internal assets (Wulff, Donato Lurie, 2015). Even out of a sector, dependencies such as are with within their logistic and supply chain that can be exploited and other interdependencies are areas of interest. In order to optimize continuity, the approach posits adapting to the dynamic industry externalities to increase resilience faster disruptions owing to emergencies regardless their cause. The approach strives to reduce the potential impact of these eventualities and timely restoration of the critical infrastructure to optimal functioning. To ensure the efficiency of the approach optimization of public-private partnership and collaborative risk management becomes necessary. The goals and objectives of the stakeholders of the industry should be aligned from the onset and a free flow of information towards that end should be facilitated. The HPH Sector objectives from its vision, mission, and goals are validated in policy. It follows that policy impediments in the national arena and within the sector should be addressed promptly (Homeland Security, 2016). Apart from the policy, the guiding principles of the sector are formulated after consideration of multiple factors ranging from the current progress in risk mitigation, the available resources, identified capability gaps, emerging risks and the prevalent risk management priorities. These objectives are utilized to coordinate the collective operations within the sector. They reflect considerations of not only the HPH sub-sector but also the regional, local public and private partners. Efforts to mobilize public-private partnership support needs of HPH critical infrastructure are underway. The local, territorial, tribal, and federal government partners are not only involved in the conversation but their input is solicited during decision-making to increase their stake s in the outcome of the approach. The Sector Partnership Mission towards increasing the health sectors resilience aims to sustain the vital functions of the United States healthcare and public health delivery system. Similarly, it endeavors to espouse effective emergency preparedness and subsequent response to nationwide major hazards. Public and private sector partners are instrumental in evaluating risks; lobbying fro policy changes, coordinate plans, and provision of guidance towards preventing, protecting, mitigating, responding to, and recovering from all hazards threatening the HPH critical infrastructure. Ãâà The key sector-specific goals strive to manage the identified risks the vulnerabilities and potential consequences of disruptions. The risk management is the second step of the approach by translating the analyses of the sector into implementable recommendations for local and state public health departments as well as private sector facilities (Katina, Pinto, Bradley, Hester, 2014). The recommendations should be actionable and customized to the issues facing the respective institutions. The risk analyses should be translated into response and recovery efforts. To facilitate information sharing new mechanism as well as existing ones should be harness ensure the free flow of information. The flow implies it is bidirectional; each partner and stakeholders should give and receive information. Similarly, the government and the private sector should emulate best practices from each other. The sector goals should strive to develop and implement partnership engagement strategies to strengthen coordination. This will increase facilitate outreach efforts by reducing relationship constraints (May Koski, 2013). The operators and owners of the critical infrastructure should be acquainted with the behavioral patterns of their counterparts. The strengthening the relationships expedites the speed of information sharing and subsequent response time. The partnerships should be convenient by concentrating on the regional, local networks towards a national preparedness (Moteff, 2010). The purview of the sector specific plan involves also the cyber security attacks. The above would cripple technologically dependent networks like transport and even directly affect the health data framework. During response and recovery, the sector should be able to learn from past attacks and enact effective corrective measures (Perakslis, 2014). While seeking innovating strategies of increasing response speeds after disasters, it is equally essential to leverage past mishaps. The U.S. De partment of Health and Human Services (HHS) working in tandem with other industry players be required to evaluate their sectors milestones towards implementing recommendations. Ãâà An aggressive awareness campaign among the industry stakeholders to reiterate the essence of their input is required. The entire critical infrastructure community regardless their size their counsel should be considered (Solanas et al., 2014). The new approach as recognized that the vulnerabilities arise from the assets that are underestimated as insignificant, the specific sector focus is hinged on attention to detail. Beyond the traditional partners federal departments international partners and private sector owners even the perspective of an actual health practitioner has been given premium. The critical infrastructure workforce is strategic in identifying industry and system dysfunctionalities than an outsider (Therrien, Normandin Denis, 2017). The nonprofit sector has been instrumental in the post consequence period adding in the expediting resilience. The NGO has a close and sustainable relationship with the healthcare and public health industry as often their relief services compliment the sectors goals. The specific sector plan acts as a store for information and a centralized location where all the relevant stakeholders can access the data they require optimizing resilience and straightening their collaborative efforts (Torchia, Calabrà ² Morner, 2015). The interdependence of sectors in contemporary society implies that a catastrophe affecting the health sector will cripple the other accompanying infrastructure like transport. For instance, an airborne disease outbreak will inhibit mobility in public transport platforms. It follows that the public becomes a crucial stakeholder thus the need to facilitate access to non-critical information of resilience programs through the specific sector plan. The HPH Sectors critical infrastructure and its corresponding factors operate in a dynamic and increasingly complex setting. The shifting goal posts due to technological innovations and political changes may lead to confusion in managing the professional workforce, the systems, and assets, systems, and professional workforce operates in a highly complex and dynamic risk environment. For instance, the political changes have repealed the patient protection act causes the entire industry to adjust to new realities. Similarly, the changes in the climate have increased the frequency of naturally occurring threats though one can argue they there are artificially induced. The size of the sector and the interconnections of its networks further aggravate the situation. The open access to a majority of health facilities, physical facilities, operations, and system interconnections make the sector innately vulnerable. Towards strengthening preventative measure in the risk-prone environment, col laboration between government and the HHP sector becomes crucial. The sector has to capitalize on the vast resources at its disposal ranging from digital capabilities, consultancy resources, and other diverse authorities. The success of a program is attached to the proponents capabilities to harness wide spectrum of resources. Information sharing is not an option but the premise of the program. As the treats as constantly evolving, the sector should be equally flexible accommodating updates, and reprioritization of risk managements strategies towards optimizing security. The sector leadership should periodically evaluate the progress in implementing the recommendations in order to identify their shortcomings. References Almklov, P. G., Antonsen, S. (2014). Why Is Race A Big Issue :: essays research papers fc
Why is Race A Big Issue? The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an incredible novel. It is hard to believe that people would protest against it, but they do. Mark Twain set his story twenty years before the Civil War, during the slave era. It is written just as everyone spoke at that time, using the word ââ¬Å"nigger.â⬠This book uses the word a lot, which has upset many African-Americans. I believe that the word can be obscene, but in this book it is not. It only shows the reality of that time. I consider this book to be one of the greatest books I have read. It is actually inspired by Twainââ¬â¢s own experiences living on the Mississippi River. Many people consider Twain to have been a racist. Although he uses the word ââ¬Å"nigger,â⬠it does not mean that he was racist. If people would look past the word and actually see the story, they would realize that he is writing of a white boy and a black man who run away and start a journey together. If Twain was such a racist, then why does the story have the white boy and black man together? People think that he is racist just because he uses the word, but in that time, that is how people spoke. In present time, we will not see a black slave working in a white personââ¬â¢s home; but we will hear the word in almost every rap song there is. Many people use the word, but they probably donââ¬â¢t know where or why the word became what it is now. The word started out as Negro in the north, during that time; but in the s outh, people put the southern dialect on the end and said ââ¬Å"nigger.â⬠I wish that people would look at this book as what it actually is, impressive. People cannot take into mind that ââ¬Å"niggerâ⬠was a word used every day at that time. I do not think that Twain was trying to hurt anyone, instead, I think he was trying show that a black man was just as equal to a white man. I think that in the book, Huck shows a lot of respect for Jim, even though Jim is black. Also, Huck became very close to him. In my opinion, if a black person takes being called ââ¬Å"niggerâ⬠so hard from someone of a different
